If you don’t have any security system at all right now and you have one or more Amazon Echo devices in your home, this could be a step up from your current situation. If you’re looking for a security system with monitoring services, you may want to consider SimpliSafe or Amazon’s Ring Alarm System.īut, chances are, you don’t usually keep your phone on do not disturb when you leave the house. It may be too late to notify the police or fire department by the time you do see the notifications. If your house catches fire or a burglar smashes all your windows, you won’t receive the notifications. For example, let’s say you’re at the theater and your phone is set to do not disturb. Alexa Guard won’t contact the police or fire department for you. Smart Alerts are provided for informational purposes only. Amazon spells that out multiple times in its FAQ:Īlexa Guard is not a replacement for an alarm system or life safety device and cannot contact emergency services, such as the police or fire department, on your behalf. Josh Hendrickson / How-To GeekĪlexa Guard isn’t a monitored security system. Alexa Guard Isn’t a Monitored Security System, But it’s Helpful The Simplisafe on the left offers a monitored security system the Echo on the right does not. You’ll receive an Alexa notification on your phone, too. Once enabled, you arm Guard by telling Alexa “I’m leaving” and disarm by saying “I’m home.” Your Echo will say it’s starting or stopping guarding. You choose which smart lights are automated, so your basement light isn’t turning on and off pointlessly. If you have smart lights tied to the Alexa platform, Guard can turn them on and off at random intervals to give the appearance that you’re home. If you are worried about it get a lens protector with camera cutouts OR a case that recesses the camera bump.Beyond listening for trouble, Guard can take some basic preventative actions. Typically its not until it gets really bad that a lens protector is removed revealing much better images leaving the owner with weeks, months, even years of sub optimal photos. The lens protector will catch some of the light cause images to look a bit washed out. Adding another lens also adds two additional surfaces for dust and micro scratches which will make the image softer and reduce transparency. Most of those protectors are tempered glass (or even plastic) which can scratch much easier than sapphire. The problem is when you make a place for dust to rub between things like between a lens and a lens protector.ĭegraded imagine quality would be the main problem though. Those are just a few easy sources of dust that contains minerals as hard and/or harder than Apples sapphire lens which means they can be abrasive too it. Even driving down a gravel road will kick up aluminum oxide, and then slamming on your brakes to stop will cause brake dust which is filled with silicon carbide (mostly high performance brakes). Keep in mind dust produced by grinding, cutting, sanding and drilling (abrasives and cutting materials) contain aluminum oxide, tungsten carbide, etc. Protecting the lens cover (protecting the protector?) can be more harmful than helpful. Apple uses sapphire crystal because its highly transparent and highly scratch resistant. Its purpose is to protect the actual camera lens behind it. ![]() Real quick, the lens you can see and touch on an iPhone is a lens cover.
